The Downfall of Nokia has Begun! Switching Allegiance!

Switching Allegiance from Nokia N97 to Apple iPhone 3GS. I like to be dramatic hence the title!

The Downfall of Nokia has Begun! Switching Allegiance!

Today, I Dani2xll, have joined the masses of Apple crunchers and bought myself  an iPhone 3GS.

So… before we get much further lets get the boring bits out of the way. Amongst my previous Nokia symbians have been 6600, N70, and N95-1 to name a few. My present two Nokia phones consist of the N82 (imaging) and N97.

Ok, that aside, my early days of symbian were the best days of my life, I loved everything the phone was capable of and the more I could stretch the phone beyond the 'out of box' condition, the more pleasant an experience it was for me.

We finally arrive at the N80 and the trials and tribulations of the hinged wobble arises. Moving on swiftly the N95-1 doubled up on the horrors of the hinge with ram issues that had not surfaced during the lifetime of its lower counterpart the N70. What happened here Nokia? Six months later Nokia cleans-up its act with the N95-3, the N95-1 American counterpart, resolving the ram issues, appalling battery life and slide fixture. Note I live in the UK and barring the 3g absence the N95-3 gave me a happy 12 +months, after the eating-memory-card apps and eating mass-memory apps of the N95 8gb. Vowing I would not get another mass-memory phone unless it also had expanded memory capability. We race through N96 slower than my N95-3, and recognisable it was. N85 OLED screen that I could neither see, nor could I take images in sunlight. 5800's non-finger-touch-friendly (improved on since with new firmwares) and we arrive at the N97. I love it, I really do. But… we have the camera lens self-damaging issue and the browser inadequacies. Perhaps I am to blame for being so eager to jump from phone to phone, feature pack to feature pack, expecting new and better things, only to find little changed for the better, but changes made for the worse, aka xenon flash, reduction in ram availability, inconsistent between handsets.

Being a mobile user of 15 years+, I have watched and waited for another 'Great' to appear from behind the N95-3 shadow but that day has yet to come. Nokia are now in the habit that you buy one phone and two months later a new one will follow with small hardware or software changes that they could not get into the previous version giving it a new name  or new feature pack with another big price tag attached to it. No recall was made of the N95 for the faulty slide but it was 'fixed' in the N95-3.

We now have the debacle affair of the N97 camera lens, again no recall has been made to repair the damaged phones. Ye,s you can get it repaired, dependent on whom or where it was purchased, but no universal fix or information has been passed down to service centres, despite Nokia being made aware of this issue. This problem feature of the lens has been replaced in the N86. Wee now have the N97-mini arriving without the problematic camera cover removed, slightly downgraded, announced as another flagship N97 that will have kinetic scrolling throughout, with the rumour this will come to the N97. We have heard rumours before that have not borne fruit, perhaps this one will, perhaps it wont. We  have the recent announcement of Nokia's culmination of their unionship with Microsoft, the Nokia Booklet 3G. The Maemo new tablet/phone announcement and more.

However, I am not prepared to give Nokia another GBP500 for another mobile, nor are they asking me to. My reference here was to state that I have found in the Apple iPhone, the 'browser', the 'touch' and the 'app store' aka 'Ovi store' that should have been present, out-of-the-box on the Nokia N97.In less than 24 hours of the iPhone 3GS ownership I have so far downloaded 5 apps in just a quick perusal of the 'app store'  in comparison to zero in the N97 since the Ovi store was introduced.

Now do not let me make fools of you. I still love my Nokia N97 and my N82 and Nokia, but the time has come to make a stand, and make a stand I will. There will be no more Nokia's for me for another twelve months. I believe it should take a year for a new model to stand their ground, new ground-breaking features to arrive, settle-in, take-root and begin to flourish. A twelve month breathing space for Nokia to decide on their plans for the future, to find a way back to what they do best and to concentrate on whats important to the consumer. However, in the mean time the Apple iPhone 3GS alongside the Nokia N97 will serve my needs for the next twelve months as I ride the giddy scales from self-employment to becoming a student.

It will make interesting reading to see how I progress with the iPhone alongside the Nokia N97, how I put them to different use, applications and my interactions between iPhone and Nokia user relationships. I humbly suggest… you may wish to watch this space! Author: dani2xll
