You could not make this up if you tried. In preference to calling the emergency services, two young girls trapped in a drain storm in South Australia decided to update their Facebook status.
It was fortunate for the girls, aged 12 and 10, that someone was online to see their update and able to call the emergency services on their behalf. Although able to access the emergency services via their mobile phone as emergency calls are free, the girls chose Facebook as an emergency contact. The emergency services expressed worry that such a delay in getting the details and information through a social blogsite caused delay in the rescue and could have proved fatal.
