My methods of updating to a new firmware
The N97 has UDP (user data preservation) built-in so it will save your important information on your phone such as contacts, schedule, messages, etc along with what you hold on your mass memory and memory card.
However, If you and I are of like-mind, my method is cleanliness is next to godliness.
1. Firstly back-up contacts, schedule and notes via Nokia pc-suite. I dont bother with the extra's but you should back-up those parts of your phone that you consider of importance to you.
2. Remove memory card and via card-reader remove all the additional files that nokia adds to it. I maintain my own folders in my memory card for images, videos, musics, apps etc so I can easily verify and clear out the Nokia added folders.
3. Back-up or copy via card-reader anything you wish to keep that is on the mass-memory.
4. Format the mass-memory and phone so that it is all clean and shiny ready for its new outfit.
(The N97 is hard reset/formatted by extending the keyboard. and holding down the shift key (on the left) the space bar, and the delete key whilst powering up.)
5. Finally, you can now update the firmware and as I am rather odd about such things, following the updating of firmware, I format both my phone and mass-memory again. I like to get rid of extra's that Nokia may feel that I need to have without my saying so.
My phone is now all clean and new, I pop back-in my memory card and start to re-install all my applications from scratch. That way everything is cleansed, new and ready for the get-go.
Skip or remove the points above that does not fit your purpose.
