The mobile phone boom has arrived in Cuba following the legalisation by the communist government. However, with the high cost of calls, phones are used as pagers.
The caller notes the number of the incoming call and returns the call via a landline. The cost of a mobile phone far outreaches the hands of an impoverished worker, with average monthly wages of $20 (£13). Government stores sell the handsets at $60 and charge a further $50 to activate the service via Etecsa, the state phone company. Despite this, there is a constant queue outside the Etecsa store in Havana. Brian Latell, former CIA analyst and Cuba expert said "even if it is not always immediately visible, the arrival of new technology brings changes which bubble under the surface".
