Contrary to popular belief – you do not need to know someone who is deaf to benefit from learning sign language.  Nokia Beta Labs has released eSign.  eSign: Are You Listening?

eSign is available for both hearing and non hearing users to learn the Sign Language Alphabet. The app is available for free in the Ovi store for a limited time.

In 3 countries alone 20 million users live with a hearing disability. Nokia Ovi Store is available in 190 countries. The UK has approximately 8.9 million deaf citizens, the USA close to 9 million and South Africa has over 1.5 million. Globally the aim of this application is to close the gap in communication between those with hearing and those without.

Based on the fun flash card concept eSign is suitable for the whole family. The app is available for the American Sign Language, the Canadian Sign Language and the South African Sign Language. eSign is available for Nokia S60 5th and Symbian 3 devices. For each person that downloads this application, this brings us one step closer in healing the gap between hearers and non hearers. Should you not know someone in your immediately social circle who lacks hearing, it is still a good opportunity to learn sign language. You may never know when it will of aid.
