Following Apple’s WWDC11 Conference the new iOS5 was revealed. The final product is due in the fall but today we take a look at the product available for developers.
First in our sights we take a look at two of the new apps, which are part of the new iOS5. The video app uses the icon from the iPod Touch and there is a new Reminders app.

The Music player has a new icon, again taken from the iPod Touch.

There is a new Newsstand app, which is a one-stop-shop where all your magazines are collected for viewing. This is not working at present while we wait for app developers and newspapers publishers to create their content.
The lock screen incorporates a new capability. It enables camera shooting directly from this point. The action is accessed via a double press of the home key when the screen is lit. The camera icon takes you directly into the Camera application, which is very handy as you no longer need to unlock the iPhone to take a photo or shoot a video.
Once in the Camera app there are two new options available at the top of the screen display for HDR and Grid. The Grid mode will show a grid on the screen to make it easier to position your subject in the middle of the photo being taken.
iOS5 incorporates a new inbuilt Dictionary. Select a word on a webpage or in another app where text selection is available and a new option pops-up called Define.
This brings up a Dictionary for the selected word.
The new Reminder app allows you to set reminders for anything you wish. You can set a time for a Reminder alarm and in addition you can set the Reminder alarm based on your arrival at a particular location, very cool indeed.
Backup with iCloud! This new initiative is an innovative step forward by Apple. Your choice of backup can be selected from a growing list ranging from app data to music. All your desires are covered and taken care of without the need for wires.
Your allowance is 5gb of free storage after which you can add more space for a yearly fee.
Backup options are automatic if you have it set up, but there is the option of a manual backup in the iCloud settings.
The iCloud option is located under the settings menu in the iPhone.
With iCloud comes the option for Photo Stream. This facility uploads your photos to iCloud and downloads them on to your other iCloud supported devices. If you update to a new software etc, upon restart of the device you have the option to restore your backup from iCloud.
iMessaging is the future of text messaging. It allows you to send text and media over a wi-fi or 3G connection to other iMessage users. It is inbuilt into the standard messaging application and activates automatically. Through unseen protocols iMessage is aware if the person you are texting has iMessage and a connection. If the person you are contacting does not have iMessage or is without connection then a standard text message will be sent over your operators network. iMessage can be disabled via the message settings menu, it also has a few other new options.
When sending an iMessage the Send button is in blue and iMessage is displayed in the text input field.
When sending a standard text message the Send button is green and Text Message is displayed in the text input field.
Twitter has been given integration throughout iOS5. The settings are available in the main settings menu. However, you are still required to install the Twitter app. It is unknown at this time whether the default twitter application will be inbuilt into the iPhone to avoid having to install it.
You can upload an image to Twitter direct from the iPhone photo application.

Furthermore, new options available in iOS5 are being discovered as we speak. There is now the option to add Emoji smileys without downloading the app from the AppStore, the option for this is in the keyboard settings.
A new feature allows you to create or define Shortcuts. You can define any shortcut as you wish, then use them when typing a message or other text creation. For example, You can enter the shortcut (brb) for the phrase ‘be right back’, then when you type ‘brb’ in the text entry field you get the option to enter ‘be right back’ with no extra typing involved. This is incredibly useful.
New to the Settings menu is LED Flash For Alerts. When this is set to ‘on’ and your device is locked, on a receipt of a new notification, the Camera LED will flash to let you know you have an alert. This is quite handy for those occasions when you use the silent mode on your device. There are also options to set custom vibrations.
Over The Air update is a new option to update the devices software over the air without the use of wires.
Notification is THE best initiative, which appear in iOS5. I will not go into very much detail here as we have seen this over the internet and at WWDC. So as a compliment here are some screenshots of the Notification settings.
And here we view some screenshots of the Notification in action.
The Notification Centre.
So… Here we come to a close. If you finds further changes, which not noted here , please leave a comment of what you have found on you device.
Thank you for reading our article regards Dani and Biggzy.
