Golf Resort Adopts iPad Wine List

Ayrshire golf resort in Turnberry has adopted a new wine list in the form of the iPad. Guests can view products, descriptions and tasting notes of the available wines on offer and even search by their favourite drink by grape, year, country or origin.

The hotel has purchased ten iPad with adapted software to prevent access to the internet. As yet guests cannot order from the iPad but this is hoped to be coming soon. The trial is the start of a plan to adopt the iPad in its other restaurants, bars and likely to be part of the table-tops in the family-friendly restaurant planned at Turnberry.

Ralph Porciani, director of operations at Turnberry, said: “We’ve seen this in the States for a while and it improves and enriches the experience of choosing from a menu.

“The ability to combine images, with more colourful background information on the product – be it the wine maker or the grapes – is incredibly satisfying for guests and gives them a far more informed choice.”

“Around 60 per cent of our guests wander around with an iPad already tucked under their arm. So it is a technology which is very useable and very familiar to many people.”

The iPad as a replacement menu is a growing concept across Europe and the US and where restaurants claim a rise in profits as diners find inhibitions are lifted ordering direct, rather than through waiters.

But Porciani said he does not want technology to replace his staff: “This is to enhance service, not to replace it.
