Google has entered the hardware market with the purchase of Motorola.

Whilst the market was focused on rumour of a Nokia acquisition by Microsoft, all eyes were firmly turned away from Motorola and Google leaving them to make a quiet purchase to surprise us all. Motorola has strugged of late against the competition in the smartphone market and it is hoped that Google’s dominance in software, search engine and maps will provide Motorola with the necessary boost needed to rebuild the power dominance that it previously enjoyed during the heady days of the Motorola Razr.

 Triplets for HTC

HTC’s net profit for this first quarter, nearly triples that of last year. In the race from traditional phones to smartphones demand remains strong among consumers. HTC’s value US$33.88 billions, slightly above Nokia, the number one handset manufacturer by shipments US$33.8 billion.

HTC is a Taiwanese company whose phones run using Google’s operating system.

Yuanta analyst Bonnie Chang said she expects HTC’s handset shipments to grow 20% in the second quarter from the first quarter because the company will ramp up production of its 4G dual-core processor Android smartphones and 3G Android handsets.

Market-research firm Gartner Inc. forecasts Android phones will account for 49% of the smartphone market by 2012, up from about 23% in 2010. The Android platform allows device makers, including HTC, that may not want to or be able to create their own operating system to manufacture smartphones.

“We don’t expect to see supply chain issues (stemming from the March 11 Japan earthquake) to hurt HTC’s shipments in the second quarter as it has adequate inventories. It still has two months to build up inventories for the third quarter,” said Chang.

 US Blockage: Google Books

A New York court has blocked the agreement between publishers and Google of books online. Google had previously settled a six-year class action suit over copyright infringement.  However, the New York Court has stated the deal would ‘simply go too far’, in giving Google an unfair advantage against its competition.

Google’s managing counsel, Hilary Ware stated “Regardless of the outcome, we’ll continue to work to make more of the world’s books discoverable online through Google Books and Google eBooks.”
